'The Hobbit' Turns 80

“In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.” When Tolkien wrote these words, which would become one of the most famous and most memorable opening sentences in all of literature, he could not have known what literary power would be unleashed by his creation of the diminutive hole-dwelling creature, Bilbo Baggins. This year, as we celebrate the eightieth anniversary of the publication of The Hobbit, we can see that the book’s success has been nothing short of a worldwide phenomenon. It is now rated as the sixth bestselling work of literature of all time, with over 100 million copies sold.

Dead Sea Scrolls scam: Dozens of recently sold fragments are fakes, experts warn

Seven decades have passed since that Hollywood-esque discovery of some 900 manuscripts and up to 50,000 fragments in the 11 caves of Qumran. Now, accusations of dozens of million-dollar forgeries make for a worthy sequel.

It’s a whodunit involving a complex network of high-stakes deals with dubious provenance, and perhaps even academic obfuscation. The process by which the forgeries are being manufactured has yet to be fully exposed. The motive is entirely clear: The tiniest of ancient snippets sells for well over $100,000 per fragment in these private off-the-books sales.

Post-Equifax Breach, It’s Time for a Digital Universal ID

In the wake of the massive Equifax data breach, once again a spotlight has been shone on the overuse of the not-so-secret number that passes for a national ID in the United States–the Social Security Number (SSN). Perhaps we have become numb to these hacks and data breaches. What, my credit card number was compromised? The credit card company will cancel it and issue another one. My address information? My cell number? Well that’s already out there in many places. My bank account number? Whatever, I’ll change it.

The most mysterious star in the cosmos

Round 5 a.m. on a Tuesday this past May, Tabetha "Tabby" Boyajian sat staring at a laptop, cross-legged on her couch in the living room of her Baton Rouge, La., home. The coffee table was cluttered with the artifacts of an all-nighter: an empty wine glass to calm her nerves alongside an empty coffee mug to fuel her through the night.

The One Question Doctors Never Think To Ask…

A few days ago a former sweetheart (between wives!) told me her brother had a kidney infection. She was puzzled because he was usually formidably healthy and had never had anything like it before. It seemed just “out of the blue.”

So I asked the one question that doctors NEVER ask (not even most holistic doctors) and that is:

Did he have dental work just a few days before his kidney infection started?

Medical coercion? Texas teacher promises extra credit for completing a controversial assignment

Dallas, Texas, high school is being accused of discrimination after she offered extra credit only to students who received the flu vaccine.

What are the details?

A Dallas mother, who wished to remain unidentified, was sure her son was mistaken last month when he came home from Lake Dallas High School and told her that his Pre-AP biology teacher was offering extra credit to students who received the flu vaccine.

Inflammation, Free Radical Damage, Oxidative Stress, Hydrogen and Cancer

Studies on brain tumors in the past 10 or more years have shown an increase in the incidence of brain tumors in the general population. Can you guess why this is so? Extensive research during last two decades has revealed the mechanism by which continued oxidative stress leads to chronic inflammation, which in turn mediates most chronic diseases including cancer.

Liver function improves with the consumption of Broccoli sprout extract

A Japanese study of broccoli sprouts and liver function has found the sulforaphane-rich food to be highly beneficial. An extract from broccoli sprouts given to male participants was shown to improve hepatic abnormalities and overall liver function significantly.

For the study, the researchers conducted a double blind, randomized placebo-controlled trial of males with fatty liver disease. The subjects received either extract of broccoli sprouts in capsule form, or a placebo. The capsules contained glucoraphanin, a precursor for the sulforaphane in broccoli sprouts.
