The Genetic Arms Race: Human Dignity at Stake

In late July, the MIT Technology Review published news many of us have been dreading: A team of scientists at Oregon Health and Sciences University have successfully created genetically-modified human embryos.

This is an early step, to borrow a headline from the Technology Review, toward “engineering the perfect baby.” It’s an early step in creating a parental arms race in which people with resources scramble to create their vision of the “perfect baby,” with, potentially, the eye color, intelligence, and other traits they desire.

Major genetic breakthrough may help fight inherited disease

A big breakthrough in gene editing may be a major step in defeating deadly defects and diseases.

In a first, researchers safely repaired a disease-causing gene in human embryos, targeting a heart defect best known for killing young athletes — a big step toward one day preventing a list of inherited diseases.

In a surprising discovery, a research team led by Oregon Health and Science University reported Wednesday that embryos can help fix themselves if scientists jump-start the process early enough.

Are Scientists Playing God By Manipulating DNA Of Human Embryos?

Some human beings think that they are close to achieving the power of God, and widespread fear exists that even this degree of power will corrupt.

Researchers at London's Francis Crick Institute have been given the green light to experiment with and modify human embryos in the same controversial fashion that giant dogs and mini pet pigs have been created in laboratories.

Known as Clustered Regularly Interspaced Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR), the technology strategically identifies specific genes, alters them and changes a living organism's DNA.

Wonder Why the Price of Some Generics Are So High?

Recent investigations reveal major price fixing in the generic drug sector, drastically increasing costs to consumers looking to save money.

This past January, Jeffrey Glazer, the CEO of Heritage Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Indian drug company Emcure Pharmaceuticals, pleaded guilty to violating US antitrust law by conspiring with manufacturers to fix the prices of generic drugs. Glazer is reportedly cooperating with federal prosecutors, which might implicate Emcure’s CEO, Satish Mehta, in the price fixing scheme.

Genetic Code Complexity Just Tripled

A codon is a triplet of three nucleotides in DNA. Genes are read in these triplet codons, each one standing for an amino acid or a “punctuation” mark as the gene gets translated (61 of the 64 possible triplets actually code for amino acids; the others work as “start” and “stop” codons). This much we’ve known since the 1960s. Now, however, two scientists from the University of Utah want to complicate matters further.

An article at Phys.org explains:

Genetically modified children: Baby born with DNA from three different people

U.S. scientists recently announced the birth of a baby containing DNA from three different people in an article in New Scientist. They will present the details of the new procedure they used at the October meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

The procedure, which is illegal in the United States, was performed in Mexico.

One night of sleep loss can alter clock genes in your tissues

Uppsala University, 21-Jul-2015
Swedish researchers at Uppsala University and the Karolinska Institute have found that genes that control the biological clocks in cells throughout the body are altered after losing a single night of sleep, in a study that is to be published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

‘Science Supports Genesis’: Geneticist Says Evidence Confirms Biblical Adam and Eve

A respected molecular geneticist explores the historicity of Adam and Eve in a newly-released documentary, explaining that modern findings in the field of genetics confirm the Bible’s teachings that all humans descended from an original couple created by God.
