Nasal spray flu vaccine becoming available

WASHINGTON — The long-awaited first vaccinations against swine flu — the squirt-in-the-nose kind — begin early next week in parts of the country, and states are urging people to be patient until more arrives.

Just a trickle of vaccine, 600,000 doses of the nasal spray FluMist, will be divided among 21 states and four large cities by Tuesday, with more small shipments to more states later in the week.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Many people who have died of swine flu infections in the United States have also had bacterial infections, health officials reported on Wednesday.

A study of 77 patients who died of the new pandemic H1N1 virus showed 29 percent of them had so-called bacterial co-infections, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.

About half of these had Streptococcus pneumoniae, which can be prevented with a vaccine, the CDC said.

Using technology originally developed for mass disasters, Boston disease trackers are embarking on a novel experiment - one of the first in the country - aimed at eventually creating a citywide registry of everyone who has had a flu vaccination.

The resulting vaccination map would allow swift intervention in neighborhoods left vulnerable to the fast-moving respiratory illness.

Roughly 11,000 doses of a nasal spray vaccine will arrive locally in the next few weeks, and will be distributed to agencies serving people identified as at higher risk for catching or transmitting the fast-spreading virus.

Swine flu is responsible for 91 deaths in Florida, said Steve Huard, spokesman for the Hillsborough County Health Department.

Remembering The Swine Flu of 1976

As the H1N1 flu makes it's way across North America, one retired doctor is remembering when Swine Flu hit just a few decades ago.  In 1976, an outbreak forced health departments everywhere to offer vaccinations for everyone, but catching the swine flu wasn't the only side effect.

It was 1976 and the government was doing everything it could to stop the swine flu from spreading, like airing public service announcements.
