FDA calls for stronger warnings on asthma drugs

CHICAGO (Reuters) - U.S. regulators on Friday asked the makers of three popular asthma medications to add new warnings to their labels stating that the drugs could increase the chances of severe asthma episodes that could result in death.

The warnings involve long-acting bronchodilator medicines Advair and Serevent, made by GlaxoSmithKline , and Foradil from Novartis AG . Patients use them daily to relax bronchial muscles and prevent asthma attacks.

Second-hand smoke tied to asthma severity

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke appears to increase asthma severity and might even influence the risk of hospital admission, according to a new report.

"Our study showed that second-hand tobacco smoke can be harmful for adults with asthma," lead investigator Dr. Mark D. Eisner told Reuters Health. "These results provide further justification for banning smoking in public places."

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Asthma is not being treated adequately in young women, both before and during pregnancy, according to new data that support the findings of previous studies.

Appropriate use of inhaled corticosteroids during pregnancy reduces illness due to asthma, Dr. Michael Schatz from Kaiser-Permanente Medical Center in San Diego told Reuters Health.

Blocking chemical helps patients with severe asthma

LONDON (Reuters) - Blocking a powerful immune system chemical could provide a new treatment for patients suffering from severe asthma, scientists said on Thursday.

Asthma affects about 150 million people worldwide. About one in 10 sufferers has a severe form of the illness.

Professor Stephen Holgate, of Southampton General Hospital in southern England, and his team said patients with severe asthma had higher levels of a chemical called tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha) than other sufferers.

Warning: Your job may give you asthma

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Work-related asthma is fast becoming one of the most commonly diagnosed occupational respiratory diseases in this country, and people who work in certain industries may run a higher risk than others, new study findings show.

An analysis of survey responses from nearly 21,000 adults revealed that men and women who work in printing or publishing, furniture or lumber, health care, and entertainment and recreation, may be most likely to be diagnosed with asthma, as are those who work for automobile dealers and gas stations.
