Ask the Expert: Omega-3 Fatty Acid

Omega-3 fatty acids (also known as n-3 fatty acids) are polyunsaturated fatty acids that are essential nutrients for health. We need omega-3 fatty acids for numerous normal body functions, such as controlling blood clotting and building cell membranes in the brain, and since our bodies cannot make omega-3 fats, we must get them through food. Omega-3 fatty acids are also associated with many health benefits, including protection against heart disease and possibly stroke. New studies are identifying potential benefits for a wide range of conditions including cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and other autoimmune diseases such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.

The most important antioxidant for diseased cells

Known as the “master” antioxidant and detoxifier, glutathione has been shown to help prevent disease by detoxifying the body, reducing inflammation and strengthening the immune system. This essential antioxidant works to protect your cells from the inside out and helps to slow down the aging process. But, one form of glutathione stands head and shoulders above the rest.

Antioxidant doubles liver transplant success rate

The success of liver transplants and the survival of transplant patients can be dramatically improved by injecting livers with an antioxidant prior to surgery, according to a study conducted by researchers from Padova University in Italy and published in the journal Liver Transplantation. The effect is particularly striking in "suboptimal" livers, such as those harvested from deceased organ donors.
