Possible Human Ancestors Lived In Spain 780,000 Years Ago

1998-10-28

TORONTO---Some 780,000 years ago, the first Europeans were using simple stone tools to scratch out a living in a cave called Gran Dolina in the Atapuerca Mountains of northern Spain. Whether they were direct ancestors of modern Homo sapiens or an evolutionary dead end like the Neanderthals is for anthropologists to decide. But Josep Pares is certain of one thing: they were living there 780,000 years ago.

The Peruvian Skulls

These unusually shaped skulls were

photographed by Robert Connolly on his trip around the world during which he was collecting materials about ancient civilizations. Robert Connolly published his photographs on a CD-ROM, titled The Search For Ancient Wisdom, Cambrix, 1-80 10-992-8781.

Since we unfortunately just have Connolly's photographs, it's very difficult to suggest any date or serious race assessment.

Mistleoe Mistery

Q. Since 'tis the season to be jolly, I am planning to hang some mistletoe up in my doorway. A friend told me that I should not do this because mistletoe is poisonous. Is this true?

A. The name mistletoe is said to derive from the Celtic word for "all-heal." This correlates with its historical use for everything from nervous complaints to bleeding to tumors.
