Cancer patients who aren't getting enough pain control from conventional medications may be able to find relief in the ancient Chinese practice of acupuncture. A recent study found that this complementary therapy reduced pain by 36% in people with advanced cancer.

Hamburg (dpa) - Using needles against pain. This apparent contradiction is finding ever more adherents in Germany. About 40,000 doctors in Germany are now offering acupuncture and many patients prefer it to traditional medicine.

But doctors and the health insurance companies continue to dispute acupuncture's therapeutic qualities.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Women who are trying to conceive may get a push in the right direction from acupuncture, according to a new report.

A review of medical literature regarding the benefits of acupuncture to women's fertility reveals that the ancient technique can help reduce stress, increase blood flow to the reproductive organs and help normalize ovulation--all of which can help a woman conceive.

Through diagnosis, the acupuncturist pinpoints the weakness in the chain of energy (qi) and needles are inserted into any of 800 points along invisible meridien channels to stimulate the flow of qi. The meridiens are each related to an organ, including the lung, kidney, stomach, spleen and heart. Moxibustion is a technique using the herb moxa which is burnt at an acupoint to generate heat; moxa cones or sticks are placed on or near the skin, or on the ends of the acupuncture needles to stimulate qi.
