The cost of illegal immigration is at a record high — here are the numbers you need to know

The Federation for American Immigration Reform — or FAIR — released a comprehensive report Wednesday on the rising cost of illegal immigration. Here are the numbers you should know:

Total government expenditures on illegal immigration: $134.9 billion per year

Total federal costs: $45.9 billion

● Education costs: $1.7 billion

● Medical costs: $17.1 billion

● Justice system costs: $13.1 billion

● Welfare programs: $5.9 billion

● General expenditures: $8.1 billion

Total state and local costs: $89 billion

● Education costs: $44.4 billion

● Medical costs: $12.2 billion

● Justice system costs: $10.9 billion

● Welfare costs: $2.9 billion

● General expenditures: $18.6

Though many immigration advocates believe these expenditures are offset by the taxes paid into the system by illegal immigrants, FAIR’s report shows that even when considering total taxes paid by illegal immigrants at both federal and local levels, the deficit is staggering, with the costs outweighing the taxes paid into the system by a 7-to-1 ratio.

Total economic impact on taxpayers: $115 billion

● This figure deducts the amount paid in taxes at both the federal and local levels by illegal immigrants — $19 billion — from the total government expenditures listed above.

Assuming a current population of 12.5 million illegal immigrants and 4.2 million children born in the U.S. to those here illegally, the report averaged out how much each illegal immigrant costs the American taxpayer.

Average amount spent on each illegal immigrant and their U.S.-born minor children: $8,075 per year

● This amount is reduced to $6,940 per person after taxes are considered.

The three states where taxpayers spend the most on illegal immigration:

● California: $23 billion in total cost to taxpayers

● Texas: $10.9 billion in total cost to taxpayers

● New York: $7.5 billion in total cost to taxpayers

According to FAIR, the cost of illegal immigration is the highest ever in the U.S., with a $3 billion increase in four years.
