Is your pee smelling a little off suddenly? Don’t panic just yet. Chances are it’s completely harmless. Your pee can tell a lot about your health. The color, consistency and its smell are indicators of your health. A healthy person’s pee should be pale yellow and it should have a slight smell. This means that everything is functioning well and normal.
If your pee smells weird, here’s what it means.
Why Your Pee Smells Unusual
- You Are Dehydrated
If you aren’t drinking enough water, your pee could smell differently. When your body isn’t getting adequate levels of water, your urine becomes more concentrated with ammonia. This is also why your pee becomes a deep shade of yellow. Ammonia needs a lot of water to dilute its strong smell. Just hydrate yourself regularly and your pee should smell normal again soon.
- You Ate Something Smelly
Sometimes the food you eat could be the reason behind a funky pee smell. If you’ve eaten a meal heavy in asparagus, your pee could smell weird, almost sulphoric as some people like to call it. But, one study found out only 40% of the population have the genes to smell asparagus pee. 1Eating meals loaded with onions, garlic, or Brussels sprouts can also cause your pee to smell unusual. Even drinking a lot of coffee could sometimes cause a difference in your pee. Coffee has a higher chance of making your pee smell weird when you are dehydrated.
- You Might Have Urinary Tract Infection
If your pee smells unusual and it is accompanied with pain or discomfort, the main culprit is usually urinary tract infection. When there is a buildup of bacteria in the urinary tract, it could result in pain and a difference in the smell of your pee. UTI could cause an ammonia or a slightly sweetish sort of smell. Check with your doctor immediately if you have a suspicion.
- You Could Have A Sexually Transmitted Disease
If you have chlamydia, trichomoniasis, or gonorrhea, your pee could smell. A lot of sexually transmitted diseases can lead to more production of ammonia and this, in turn, causes your pee to smell weird. If you suspect something is wrong, please visit a doctor immediately to rule out this possibility.
- You Could Have Diabetes
Is your pee smelling weird and are you urinating a lot? You might need to check if you have diabetes. In in the initial stages of type 2 diabetes, you need to pee frequently and your pee could smell sweetish or fruity. This is because your kidney is releasing excess sugar into your urine. Get your blood checked for diabetes.
- You Could Be Experiencing A Side Effect
Most vitamin supplements could cause your urine to look and smell different. This could happen when these pills are coated with artificial flavors to make it slightly tastier. Sometimes medication for heart issues and during pregnancy could also be the reason for a change in the smell of your pee.
In most cases, funky pee smell isn’t something you need to worry about. But, if your pee is bloody or cloudy, and you have pain or discomfort, please consult a doctor as soon as possible.
