BARD VALLEY, CA, Aug 29, 2011 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- A new study in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology found that the consumption of date fruit (Phoenix dactylifera) by pregnant women leads to more favorable labor and delivery outcomes.
The study by the Jordan University of Science and Technology in Irbid, Jordan, separated 114 pregnant women into two groups: one that consumed six dates per day for four weeks prior to the estimated date of delivery, and a second group that consumed none.
While the results warrant a randomized controlled trial, the study concluded that the consumption of dates during the last four weeks of pregnancy reduced the need for induced or augmented labor, and produced a more favorable delivery outcome. Specifically, the group of women who consumed the date fruit was found to have:
-- Higher mean cervical dilation (3.52 cm vs. 2.02 cm) -- Higher proportion of intact membranes (83% vs. 60%) -- Higher rates of spontaneous labor (96% vs. 79%) -- Less need for prostin/oxytocin (28% vs. 47%) -- Shorter first phases of labor (510 min vs. 906 min)
