General Mills has announced that they are recalling their gluten-free Cheerios because they may contain gluten. They spent millions of dollars on a Findley flour mill to produce gluten-free oat flour. They then built a seven-story concrete monolith and filled it with expensive equipment to make sure that no gluten filled grains snuck into the oat shipments. (3)

Yet, four months into General Mills’ gluten free Cheerios venture, the system failed, forcing the company to recall 1.8 million boxes of Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios. The company apologized and reported that they were “embarrassed,” but gluten-free fans are struggling to trust the company following this fiasco. (3)

The mishap was found after the federal food industry regulators, and General Mills received complaints of illness from those who had eaten gluten-free Cheerios. Since mid-September, the FDA received 125 reports of adverse health effects. (3)
Every company makes mistakes, but General Mills has been making a lot of mistakes in the ingredient profiles of their products.
