A delicious way to fight diabetes

By Lowe: Fighting off diabetes can be as easy as picking out the right foods to eat. A study at the Harvard School of Public Health of about 300,000 people shows that one particular fermented food can decidedly lower your risk of this condition.

The research combines data from the Professionals’ Follow-up Study (HFPS), including about 51,000 male dentists, pharmacists, vets, osteopathic physicians and podiatrists, the Nurses’ Health Study (NHS), including about 120,000 female nurses, and the Nurses’ Health Study II (NHS II) following about 116,671 female nurses. It shows that people who eat yogurt daily (at least a cup) reduce their diabetes risk by 18 percent.

Other studies have shown that the calcium, magnesium and fatty acids found in yogurt may help shrink your chances of type 2 diabetes. Plus, yogurt’s live cultures of probiotic bacteria can help the body achieve a healthier profile of circulating fatty acids and boost antioxidant production, lowering oxidative stress.

Frank Hu, a researcher at Harvard says: “We found that higher intake of yogurt is associated with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, whereas other dairy foods and consumption of total dairy did not show this association. The consistent findings for yogurt suggest that it can be incorporated into a healthy dietary pattern.”

Type 2 diabetes usually strikes when your body is unable to produce sufficient insulin or the cells in the body can’t respond to insulin and sugar builds up in the blood. Your risk for diabetes grows if someone in your family has diabetes or if you never exercise, gain weight and eat too many processed foods. About 366 million people globally have type 2 diabetes. Experts expect this number to grow to 552 million people by the year 2030.
